Rehoming Policies

Kittens

Although it is not our policy to highlight kittens in this website. We frequently have kittens for which we are seeking permanent homes with responsible caring people. All kittens rehomed by us have either been rescued by us, handed in to us by other people or have been born here to pregnant queens which we have rescued. It is not our policy to breed kittens for sale.

Cats not featured

Not all cats held by Drifters Reach Cat Refuge will have been featured in this website. Many other cats may be available for rehoming. Why not come and see our cats for yourself? You simply need to ring for an appointment.

Home Checks

Any cats rehomed by us may be subject to Home Checks before homing can take place. This is especially so with kittens. The purpose of such checks is simply to ascertain the suitablility and compatibility of the home offered with the cat or kitten sought. No offence should be taken where we do not feel that a particular cat or kitten would be best placed in a particular home.

Trial Period

If you are considering taking in a rescued cat but have other animals and are unsure whether they will mix, then we are happy for you to take a cat on a trial basis.

Keeping your cat

Having taken a cat into your home it is essential that you take steps to ensure that if your cat can be traced back to you if lost. Cats which have been rehomed may be more prone to losing their way home than one which has never lived elsewhere. Identity chips are excellent though you should still use a name tag with your phone number on, as not everyone will have access to a scanner. Always get your collar and name tag on your new cat as a priority. If you leave it until you intend to let your cat outside, your cat may be left without a chance of being reunited with you if escaping earlier through an open door or window. When rehomed a cat should always be kept inside for some time before being allowed out. This is because cats are orientated to places rather than people as are dogs, and need time to establish links to their new home.

Neutering Agreements

If you have taken a cat or kitten with a neutering condition in the agreement, then you must have the neutering done within the time agreed and return the confirmation of neutering certificate signed by the veterinary practise used. Failure to comply with the undertaking may vitiate the homing agreement rendering it null and void and legally oblige you to return the cat upon the request of Drifters Reach Cat Refuge.
